We’re happy to let you know about the Boston Boxer! Have you heard of this dog breed before? If not, you’re in for a treat! Read on to learn about these wonderful dogs and whether one would be right for you and your family. Let’s get started!

What is a Boston Boxer?

The Boston Boxer is a hybrid dog breed that’s the result of mixing a purebred Boxer with a purebred Boston Terrier. These dogs have become popular in recent years, and for a good reason.

The Boston Boxer is a fairly new dog breed and we don’t know much about the history of these dogs. However, we can learn about them by reviewing their purebred parents.

Quick Overview of the Boxer

The Boxer is thought to have been developed in Germany, where the dogs were used for hunting. Boxers are large dogs that resemble Bulldogs. Boxers have large, muscular bodies and square heads. The dogs look pretty scary, and yet they have sweet faces with soulful, intelligent eyes. What’s more, these dogs can also be quite clownish at times. So, they are a bit mischievous.

Boxers are highly intelligent dogs that can be somewhat stubborn. They’re not recommended for inexperienced pet parents. However, they can make great family companions who are gentle and patient with kids. The dogs are very loving and loyal to their families and will protect them from intruders.

The dogs have also been used as working dogs with the military and police; however, the Boxer has also been used in search & rescue work, and they make great watchdogs.

The Boston Terrier

The Boston Terrier is the other purebred parent of the Boston Boxer. Boston Terriers originally came from Boston, Massachusetts, in the late 1800s. The dogs are very popular in the US. Boston Terriers are highly intelligent dogs that are very affectionate and lovable. How can you look at a Boston Terrier and not fall in love with that adorable face?

These dogs can be somewhat stubborn and sometimes have moments of hyperactivity. However, the dogs continue to be extremely popular with pet parents. The dogs are small, with sturdy, muscular bodies. They have shiny black and white coats with standard markings (these dogs always look like they’re wearing a tuxedo). The dogs also have ears that stand erect and almost look a little like bat ears.

With parents like these, how could you go wrong with a Boston Boxer?

The Boston Boxer usually stands between 15 to 22 inches and weighs between 25 to 55 lbs. They have a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years.

Boston Boxer Appearance

As a hybrid dog breed, the Boston Boxer doesn’t have a standardized appearance. However, they do usually resemble a small Boxer. They have a wrinkled forehead and ears that usually hang down but can stand up when on the alert.

Boston Boxers have dark brown eyes. They have short coats that are usually brindle, fawn, black, or a combination of all three colors, with white markings that can vary.

Boston Boxer Temperament

The Boston Boxer is a dog that loves to play and has a ton of energy! The dogs are athletic and love to run and jump. Plus, they have the stamina to keep this up for quite a while before they tire out. These hybrid dogs are loving and loyal to their families and can be very protective. The dogs are wary of strangers and will become aggressive and bark.

Boston Boxers are also sensitive to their environment and prefer a regular schedule each day. They tend to become stubborn if they have a day that’s not going according to schedule. The dogs are easy to train and highly intelligent.

Are Boston Boxers Good Family Companions?

Boston Boxers can be great family pets. They’re very friendly, playful, and filled to overflowing with energy. They usually get along great with kids and love to play with them.

However, these dogs are best for families that are active and can provide them with all the exercise they require every day.

Do Boston Boxers Get Along with Other Pets?

The Boston Boxer is very friendly and can get along with other pets. They usually do best when raised with other pets; however, they are rarely aggressive toward other pets.

Boston Boxer Food Requirements

Boston Boxers need about three cups of food a day, divided between two meals. They do best on a dry kibble dog food that has plenty of protein and is formulated for small, active dog breeds.

Boston Boxer Exercise Requirements

Boston Boxers are energetic dogs that need plenty of exercise every day. They need between 45 to 90 minutes of exercise daily.

Keep in mind that these dogs can become hyperactive all of a sudden. On these days, it may be necessary to add a second walk into your schedule.

Training

When it comes to training, the Boston Boxer is highly intelligent and is best with a pet parent who can offer consistency in their training. The dogs respond best to positive reinforcement training methods. However, a pet parent may need to have patience when training their Boston Boxer.

Boston Boxer Grooming

Boston Boxers have medium-length hair that’s thick; however, their fur is straight and easy to take care of. They also don’t shed as much as other dog breeds and may be a good choice for anyone who has dog allergies. The dogs need to be brushed about once a week to keep their fur shiny and clean.

In addition, these hybrid dogs only need to be bathed when they become dirty and stinky!

Summing It Up

So, there you have it! The Boston Boxer is a small dog that resembles both purebred parents, the Boston Terrier and the Boxer. These dogs are highly intelligent and do best with a family that can provide them with the schedule they prefer and plenty of exercise.

We’re pretty sure if you choose to adopt a Boston Boxer that you’ll have a mischievous, fun dog for many years to come!
