Not many pet parents realize that foaming at the mouth is caused by salvia that’s not swallowed. When a dog is overly excited or ill, she may breathe harder, be anxious, or have other symptoms, too. It doesn’t necessarily mean she has rabies.

What Causes a Female Dog to Foam at the Mouth?

1. Heat Stroke

When a dog’s body temperature rises too high, it may cause her mouth to foam. She may also pant hard and even collapse.

Heat stroke is common in places where it’s hot and humid. What’s more, brachycephalic dogs are more susceptible to this problem. But heat stroke can affect any dog.

2. Toxic Substances

Another common cause of a female dog foaming at the mouth is a toxic substance. The chemicals your dog has eaten or been exposed to make contact with the tissues in her mouth. Her body will begin to drool excessively as a way to rid her body of the toxic substance.

3. Stress

Female dogs that are very stressed may also foam at the mouth. You may notice your dog also breathing hard, whining, or even barking, too. All of this anxiety and heavy breathing can cause her to foam at the mouth.

4. Oral Health Issues

A female dog may also foam at the mouth if she has oral health problems. These may include pain from tumors, abscesses, mouth injuries, broken teeth, and more.

5. Overexertion

Female dogs that run and play hard may also foam at the mouth. That’s because she may have overexerted herself. Her breathing may become hard, and she may not swallow her saliva. This can cause a foamy mouth.

Summing It Up

These are some of the most common reasons a female dog may foam at the mouth. If you notice your fur baby is foaming at the mouth and you’re not able to determine the cause, it’s best to call the vet. And if you notice foaming at the mouth with other concerning symptoms, definitely call the vet right away.
