In this article, we’ll take a look at bread and whether or not it can make your cat sick. Let’s get started!

What is Bread?

Most everyone is familiar with what bread is! However, it’s always a good idea to review what’s in bread, how it’s made, and more. This is especially the case when your cat is a bread thief!

Bread is a staple food across the world. It comes in many forms. In the US, most people eat bread that’s made with flour, yeast, sugar, salt, and other ingredients. White bread is a common food in many households.

It is strongly recommended to contact a Pet Poison Helpline or your veterinarian.

Did you know that bread is one of the oldest foods around? It was first developed over 30,000 years ago in Europe and Australia! Who knew?

While bread is safe for us, can our cats eat bread? Will bread make a cat sick?

Bread & Cats

The good news is that most bread is not toxic to cats. This is bread that is plain and contains no spices or flavorings. White bread, for instance, is safe for cats as long as it doesn’t contain a topping toxic to cats. That might include something like cinnamon sugar. Cinnamon is toxic to cats.

If your cat has eaten a small piece or even a slice of white bread (or wheat bread) with no topping, then he should be just fine.

Having said that, cats should never eat bread on a regular basis.

Don’t Feed Your Cat Bread Every Day

While bread is safe for cats, it’s really not a good idea to feed bread to your cat every day. The reason is that bread doesn’t contain enough nutrients to be a healthy part of a cat’s diet. Sure, your fur baby needs carbs; however, bread has too many carbs for cats.

If your cat eats too much bread, he may be filled up and not want to eat his normal cat food. Doing this on a regular basis, your cat will soon be nutrient deficient. This can lead to all sorts of health issues.

It’s OK to give your cat bread as a treat once in a while. And if your cat really likes bread, you might use this yummy snack to give your cat medications wrapped in the bread.
